Woman’s Voices

Date: Friday, May 24th, 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Location: Rocky Neck Cultural Arts Center, 6 Wonson St., East Gloucester

Anita Pandolfe Ruchman, Childbirth Specialist and Psychotherapist, is hosting a special event: Woman’s Voices. The event sheds light on how the experience of childbirth has such a profound impact on a woman’s life. Anita invites the community to come spend an evening focusing on Birth…Karen Brody’s marvelous play, show on DVD, followed by discussion, Q&A, and information table. Meet the Lions Event

The Methuen Lions will be holding a “Meet the Lions” event on Saturday, May 25th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature Amesbury’s “Randy the Lion”, Methuen’s own mascot “Murray the Lion”, face painting by artist Jim Angelone III, prizes, kids games, and more. Oil Change Party to Benefit Cape Ann Animal Aid

On Saturday, May 25th, Extreme Truck and Auto Repair is hosting an Oil Change Party to benefit Cape Ann Animal Aid at 14 Kondelin Road in Gloucester. Oil changes will be provided for all types of vehicles and there will be fun for the whole family including BBQ food, raffles, games, and prizes. Event: Annisquam Sewing Circle's Annual Plant Sale

Organization: All proceeds benefit Cape Ann charities and public schools

The plant sale includes perennial plant treasures dug from members gardens at bargain prices, plus a wide array of the freshest, brightest annuals and perennials from a leading garden center. There will be hanging baskets, bedding plants, roses, and some exotic plants.  Not to be missed is our BAKE SALE TABLE with delicious pies, cakes, and savory treats.  Many items will be prepared from recipes in the Sewing Circles award-winning cookbook, A Circle of Recipes, which commemorated the 175th Anniversary of the organization.  These popular cookbooks will be on sale at the Plant Sale. Memorial Tree Planting for Women Veterans

Pingree School Spring Open House

Greater Newburyport Supports Boston Strong 2.62 Mile Fun Run

A group of local moms, in partnership with the Winners Circle Running Club, are hosting a 2.62 Mile Fun Run to support the One Fund and the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Free Asthma Screening

RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its members and offers a contemporary approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful, acoustic melodies, along with their fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs and  tunes a fresh sound.  Lori Lander Murphy of Irish Philadelphia says "There is truly a mystical quality to their playing. They create a lyrical sound that is at once unique as well as seamless."  Bob and Jen Strom are active session players on the North Shore and have played at the First Saturday Contra Dance in Salem, the Irish Connections Festival, New Year's Rockport Eve, The Boston Celtic Music Festival, the Salem Maritime Festival, and the Salem Arts Festival.

The North Shore Rugby Invitational 10s Tournament

Organization: Martin Family Fund

North Shore Rugby Football Club (NSRFC) will host its first rugby tens tournament to be held Saturday, June 8th at Hurd Stadium in Beverly. The match is being played to benefit the Richard Family Fund which was established by Salem Five Bank in conjunction with the City of Salem for the family of Martin Richard, the 8-year old boy killed in the Boston Marathon Bombings whose father graduated from Salem High School. The tournament will feature teams from around Massachusetts including Cape Cod RFC, Boston Ironsides RFC, and Framingham Exiles RFC. Starting with a 10 a.m. kickoff, the round-robin format will allow each team to play the others with the top two facing in a championship match to determine the winner. Admission is $5 with all profits going to Salem Five Banks Richard Family Fund.

Event: Festival by the Lake

The Festival by the Lake is one of the greatest outdoor juried art shows in New England. For over 25 years, the Wakefield Center Neighborhood Assoc. has hosted this big family fair at Lake Quannapowitt with hundreds of tables of crafters, artists from all over New England, local nonprofit organizations, live music, pony rides, family activities and great food. The Festival is steps from Downtown Wakefield with Beebe Library, shops & restaurants. The Festival is organized by the WCNA as a fundraiser for its many community projects.  All proceeds are used for town improvement projects and community events such as Fireworks, Lighting of the Trees and Easter Egg Hunt and upkeep of park grounds. Event: Roast Meat Hill Neighborhood Walking Tour

Message: In 2013, Historic New England will be exploring Everybody’s History with a series of programs, lectures, walking tours and more looking into the everyday lives of those who surrounded our museums through the years. On Saturday, June 8, local historian Jim McAllister of Derby Square Tours will explore Salem’s Roast Meat Hill neighborhood. This little known area was once home to Salem's African-American population in the nineteenth century and Italian population in the twentieth. Learn about artists, actors, and musicians that have also populated the neighborhood through the years. The tour meets at the Gedney House, located at 21 High Street, on June 8 at 10:00 a.m. The cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for Historic New England members. Concert to Benefit Winthrop School’s Playground and Ipswich Music Department

This year’s Ipswich Roots Show is dedicated to showcasing our next generation of student musicians and supporting the Winthrop Playground Committee and the Ipswich Music Department. In addition to featuring performers from the Ipswich Middle and High School, this year we are featuring virtuoso folk performer Jake Armerding. Relay for Life in Peabody

Organization: American Cancer Society

On Friday, June 14th, hundreds of caring people will gather at Peabody veterans Memorial High School on Lowell Street in Peabody for the annual Relay for Life in Peabody. Relay for Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, and this will the 19th Relay held in Peabody. The official welcoming ceremony takes place at 6 p.m. followed by the Survivor and Caregiver Lap.

The Raleigh Ringers are an internationally acclaimed, advanced community handbell choir based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since their founding in 1990, The Raleigh Ringers have been dazzling concert audiences with unique interpretations of sacred, secular and popular music, including famous rock 'n' roll tunes arranged just for handbells. The choir performs on one of the most extensive collections of bells and bell-like instruments owned by any handbell ensemble in the world. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Cape Ann Artisans 2013 Spring Studio Tour

Date: Saturday, June 22nd and Sunday, June 23rd, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Location: Gloucester and Rockport

Cape Ann is home to a thriving arts community, one of the oldest in the country. For thirty years Cape Ann Artisans has been inviting the public to visit their studios during their Open Studio weekends. The self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet 26 professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created. The work represented includes; pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, jewelry, hand-made glass beads, weaving, and block printing. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours.

There will be an assortment of family friendly activities and entertainment including live music, a petting zoo, bounce houses, duck races, pedal carts, hayrides, cow train, and much more. Benefit Golf Tournament

Date: Monday, June 24th at 7 a.m.

Organization: Salem Moose & Salem K9 Unit

A memorial golf tournament will be held at the Salem Municipal Golf Course on Wilson Road in Salem. The cost is $100 per golfer. Hole sponsorship is $50 per sign. The primary function of the group is to raise funds to continue working with the Salem Police K-9 Unit and continue serving meals to the local Special Needs and Elderly. This year’s Coastal Gardens tour will feature ten gardens.  Many of these private gardens have never been open to the public. An expansive garden near the ocean will host the special events: a luncheon and a sale of original artwork and note cards by local artists. Tickets for the garden tour are $20.00 in advance before June 1; after June tickets are $25.00, all tickets are non-refundable.  Beginning June 1 tickets will be sold at Toad Hall Bookstore, 51 Main Street.  They may be purchased in advance by calling 978-546-2896, 978-546-1638 or 978-546-5988 or online at gardentour@rockportgardenclub.org. On Sunday, June 30th, It’s My Heart will host a 5k walk, followed by a family fun picnic at Endicott Park in Danvers. This event is a great way to meet new heart families. The 9th Annual Reid’s Ride 28-Mile Bike-a-Thon

Reid’s Ride is a bicycling event to raise funds to fight adolescents and young adults cancers. Reid’s Ride 28 mile bike-a-thon is on Sunday, July 21st. The Ride starts at Lynnfield High School. Registration is at 6:30 a.m. and the ride starts at 7:30 a.m. The ride goes through Middleton, Danvers, Beverly,Manchester, and end at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. The route is well-marked and is supported by technical and safety chase teams from Lyons Ambulance, Cape Ann Amateur Radio, Landry’s Bicycles and volunteer motorcycle escorts. In 1976, Rolling Stone Magazine asked photographer Richard Avedon to cover the upcoming presidential primaries. Avedon rejected this idea, suggesting instead that he photograph the men and women who he believed were the key figures in the leadership of the United States. The resulting series of 69 photographs, titled The Family, create a vivid narrative about American politics and culture in a specific point in time.

In 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, an independent not-for-profit organization, was created with one simple mission to allow children living in low-income communities to get away from hot, noisy city streets and enjoy free summer experiences in the country. Deborah Stephanides is the Fresh Air Fund Chairperson for the North of Boston area and is looking for volunteer host families to open their homes and hearts to a New York City youngster from July 11 until July 22 this summer. Children in the Fresh Air Fund program are between the ages of six and twelve and are matched to your family’s needs and interests. Transportation is provided and the Fresh Air Fund provides for any medical expenses for children without insurance. The Fund also provides liability insurance for hosts. There are no financial requirements for hosting a child. Please consider opening your home and heart to an inner city child this summer. A visit to the home of a warm and loving host family can make all the difference in the world to an inner city child.
